Does Pasta Make You Fat?

Pasta - the comfort food of all Italians! Why do Italians eat pasta, yet don’t get fat?


Here are the reasons:

  • Small portions

  • Little sauce (about 2 tablespoons per serving)

  • The pasta is served “Al Dente” (Al Dente means firm)


Here are the numbers:

  • 1Tablespoon of oil has 119 calories

  • 1 cup of al dente (firm, with a bite) noodles 155 calories

  • 1 cup of well cooked noodles 197 calories 

  • 1 Tablespoon of parmesan cheese is 28 calories

**Sauce is high in calories because it contains oil.


Pasta al dente also has a much lower glycemic index than overcooked pasta.  Glycemic index refers to the speed with which the sugar in food passes from the small intestine to the blood stream.  Food with low glycemic index releases the sugar slowly into the blood keeping the blood sugar level constant and giving the feeling of satiety for a long time.


Enjoy the pasta by itself! It has a great favor if it is cooked in salty water.
