I Am Happy … I Enjoy Life!
Fanny said with a big smile! Fannie is a beautiful lady from Indonesia, about 35 years old, big brown eyes, wavy brown hair, and a gorgeous smile.
I met Fanny few weeks ago when I hosted a dinner party at my place for the Indonesian Delegation, here in Charlotte to meet members of the Small Business Association.
Fanny was helping me taking dishes to the table. I complimented her for the beautiful purple long skirt she was wearing. She raised the skirt and what I saw made my heart stop.
On one side a leg with a high heel red patent shoe. On the other side an elephant leg, extremely big with large and small bumps, and ending with an enormous and irregular mass, naked, no protection on top or underneath.
At that moment, looking at me and smiling, she said ” I am happy … I enjoy life!” She explained she has congenital elephantiasis and nothing could be done. She added that she has a nice life: a very nice apartment in Jakarta, a good job, a very a cute little dog, and many friends. About the job, Fanny explained she is working at Thisable Organization, where physically challenged people can find help to enter the work force.
I wanted to help even though she said she did not need any help. I called my friends doctors, I went on several websites but at the end I had to accept that nothing could be done at this point. I can hear in my mind: ‘I am happy … I enjoy life!
Elephantiasis is a condition characterized by gross enlargement of an area of the body, especially the limbs. Other areas commonly affected include the external genitals. Elephantiasis is caused by obstruction of the lymphatic system, which results in the accumulation of a fluid called lymph in the affected areas.
